WHAT ARE VENOUS DISORDERS?
Venous disorders can be a number of disorders in the vein of a person that can affect how the blood travels back from the extremities of the body to the heart. This can cause blood pooling in the limbs and leading to tired/achy legs, swelling, varicose veins, spider veins, leg ulcers and/or blood clots.

WHAT ARE COMPRESSION STOCKINGS AND HOW CAN THEY WORK FOR ME?
Compression stocks are basically a sock that is worn around the leg and compresses the limb. These socks use stronger elastics that normal garments to create significant pressure on the legs. The most pressure is in around the ankle and gradually the pressure is reduced towards the knees and thighs. The purpose of the sock is to act like a layer of muscle which in turn squeezes the veins and increases circulation by getting blood from the limbs back to the heart.

By aiding in circulation, compression socks can help in relieving symptoms of achy legs and also reduce the severity of varicose veins.

HOW CAN I ORDER COMPRESSION SOCKS?

Compression socks come in different types of pressure. And depending on the type of pressure necessary, it may be necessary to get a prescription from the doctor.

  • 15-20 mmHg pressure-these are available without a prescription from a doctor. These are generally used if the circulation problem is not very severe or if compression is only needed for a short duration of time. For example, a long flight often leads to swelling in the legs and feet. This type of compression is ideal for travel if there are no other underlying issues.
  • 20 mm HG and above pressure-this type of compression is used if there are venous issues (such as varicose veins or edema (swelling) in the legs.  This is also used by many people in the workplace in which their jobs require standing for much of their shift.

Once we know what type of compression you would require, one of our certified fitters would be happy to help you pick out the type of sock best suited for your needs. In order for you to get the most benefit out of your compression stockings, we would measure certain parts of the leg and foot and fit you into the most comfortable sock.

HOW MUCH ARE STOCKINGS? ARE THEY COVERED?
The cost of the stockings depends on the type of compression and the style of sock. We offer a variety of socks at our locations

  • Cotton
  • Wool
  • Nylon
  • Pantyhose
  • Business
  • Sports
  • Maternity

Unfortunately, compression socks are not covered under the BC Pharmacare plan. However, many extended health care plans reimburse costs for compression stockings (similar to eyeglasses, massage etc.) Check with you plan to see what is covered under compression stockings.
